He had voluntarily admitted himself to the institution in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence due to his poor mental condition. That''s where he hoped to find peace. As soon as he could, he went into the garden to paint or draw. Van Gogh painted the flowers true to life. But when it came to the green leaves, he took a wholly different approach. He turned them into uniform, two-dimensional areas of colour, framing them with thick blue contours. This was Vincent''s way of returning to the Japanese technique of woodblock printing that he had acquired a few years earlier in Paris.
